- A New Step
-
To our adoring public:
We can hardly believe it's now been four fleeting weeks since the 2010-2011 school year came to a heartbreaking end. It's been a year full of groundbreaking firsts, tremendous growth, emotion-charged tears, and Yukai's signature laughing and loving. To everyone who supported us in any way throughout the year -- from offering a positive compliment to attending our Fall Trial Period, from leading a taiko workshop to simply attending our Spring Concert or any of our other gigs, from volunteering your time to help move massive amounts of equipment every day as we hosted the 17th Annual Intercollegiate Taiko Invitational to making a donation at one our bake sales or Vietnamese sandwich and boba sales -- we thank you for enabling us to continue carrying out our mission to rock those taiko drums and share the awe-inspiring experience of taiko with the community.
As we part with the past year, we also bid our directorship farewell. On the pivotal night of Friday, June 3rd, 2011, Yukai had an end-of-the-year banquet to celebrate the triumphs of this past year, honor our graduating seniors, and, finally, announce and dub the directors of Yukai Daiko 2011-2012. Immense congratulations to our new fearless leaders Hotaru Naya and Loraine Laguerta! We have the utmost confidence that you two will preserve the fundamental goals, values, and spirit of Yukai and lead the group to new and thrilling heights in its 8th year of existence.
Thank you, Yukai, for making directorship more than just a title or a mechanic shopping list of responsibilities. In ten years' time from now the most prominent things we'll remember about directorship will not be the hours we put into planning practices, coordinating gigs, or writing up weekly emails that we wonder if you even read, but they will be the faces of people falling in love with taiko for the first time and having the time of their lives with it, the way people suddenly came out of their shells and shocked us silly, the friendships and generational prides that sparked and blossomed, the adventurous food outings, the ridiculous matchmaking, the WWBD moments,... -- in essence, we will most remember Yukai being Yukai, and then we'll know that every second of directorship was worth it. It has been an honor serving you. For the last time now we close this post and thus publicly declare that the reign of Marty and Stephanie has come to a bittersweet finish. It's time for Yukai to take a new step -- atarashii ippo!
Sincerely, Marty & Stephanie Directors of Yukai Daiko 2010-2011

- Yukai Daiko Spring Quarter Update
-
Welcome to Spring 2009!
After a long hiatus from our website, Yukai would like to welcome everyone to Spring Quarter 2009! We have an amazing line up for this quarter and we would love to share this excitement with all of our supporters, friends, and family.
First off, Yukai is extremely honored to be performing in UCLA's oldest and greatest musical tradition -- Spring Sing 2009! For those who are unfamiliar with Spring Sing, it is a huge collection of performances put together annually by UCLA's very own. Sponsored and hosted by the Student Alumni Association, Spring Sing features highly talented students from all across campus, ranging from fraternities and sororities to student-formed garage bands. From drumming to singing to dancing to celebrity sightings, Spring Sing is one amazing show you will NOT want to miss! This year, the show is bigger than ever and is scheduled for Friday, May 8th in Pauley Pavilion. Expected to come accept the Ira and George Gershwin Award is the one and only Julie Andrews! For tickets and more information, please visit http://www.uclalumni.net/CalendarEvents/springsing/2009/home.cfm.
After Spring Sing, Yukai will be taking its annual trip to the Collegiate Taiko Invitational during Memorial Day weekend (May 23-25), which is hosted this year at University of California Irvine! The Collegiate Taiko Invitational is a gathering of college-based taiko groups from all over the country. It is a chance for collegiate taiko groups to come together to share their own unique styles and interpretations of the art, while also being able to attend workshops led and taught by many prominent names of North American taiko -- On Ensemble, Kenny Endo, San Francisco Taiko Dojo, Michelle Fuji, to name a few. On May 24 and May 25, there will be two (different) concerts featuring select pieces from each group. Anyone and everyone is welcomed to come check it out! For more information or if you have any questions, please contact Evelyn at justwangit@gmail.com.
As if that wasn't enough, to end the year with a huge bang, Yukai will be hosting its 5th annual SPRING CONCERT, entitled "Kokoni Iru Yo (Here We Are)." This year's show will be held in Covel Grand Horizon Ballroom on Sunday, May 31 -- mark your calendars! Like always, this event is FREE, so please come join us as we put on a display of what we've been working on all year! Hope to see you there. :)
Finally, last but by far not least, we would like to post an belated official welcome to Yukai's Generation 5 newbies! A warm welcome to: Kristin Lo, Martin Fong, Phoebe Ping, Benjamin Liu, Erik Lee, Kevin Jercinovich, Jaclyn Chen, Alexander Sy, Michael Hirota, and Steve Chung. Congratulations and welcome to the Yukai family! To find out more about our new members, please visit the newly updated Members page!
